Why people love California poppies: they
brighten up any garden with their glorious blooms.

BEFORE: At the end of July, this poppy plant
is finished blooming and is full of seed capsules.
Left to itself, it will dry up, scatter seed, and die.

AFTER: Pruning back the mature poppy plant to ½”
makes flower beds look neater. It also prolongs the
poppy plant’s life, which will grow back and flower again.

AFTER: This closeup shows that the poppy

plant is alive and well. The stored moisture in
its taproot will help it to grow again and flower.
